Sarah Lewis: ‘Three Small Words’
November 25, 2021
My name is Sarah and I am currently studying for a masters in English Literature at the University of Bristol but I am originally from Plymouth. My poem ‘Three Small Words’ is about choosing the right moment to tell somebody that you love them.
Shall I let it tumble tongue-first towards you?
Or maybe throw it, hard, right at you?
I’d like that –
But no, perhaps, not tonight,
The timing, it’s not quite right –
Too drunken, tired and reeling
To consider such serious feelings.
So till the morning I’ll wait –
My face is sober and straight,
But yours, lit large in daylight,
Sets my heart racing in fright,
And I’m silent.
And now
Budding in my eyes as you go,
Tugging and twisting to let you know,
That I really –
Yes I really god damn do,
I feel all that
For you.
