‘Banned of Gold,’ a sonnet by Caroline Burrows

October 18, 2022
Caroline Burrows’ poetry has featured on BBC Radio 4, been printed in BBC Sky at Night Magazine, and shown at the Sheffield Adventure and Kendal Mountain Film Festivals.  Her short stories have been published in The National Flash Fiction Anthology and The Lancaster One Minute Monologues.   She has written articles for several publishers including Cycling UK & Adventure Cyclist magazines, worked with cycling theatre company The HandleBards, and took her own one-woman cycling poetry show on tour for 2 months across England in the summer.

He beckoned to me, singing his song,

The stage circled by a sparkling gold band.

He took one step out, as if it weren’t wrong.

I liked him. I didn’t like his left hand.

He lulled me with words I was longing to hear,

Whisperings disguising trouble and strife.

That demon’s voice filled me with fear.

He’d made a bed where he lied to his wife.

I dreamt he turned me into a vampire,

Taking me far from all those that I loved.

And a robin I stopped from flying higher,

Was a sparrow I’d crushed, its red breast blood.

I woke from love masquerading with greed,

Laid the undead to rest; felt my soul freed.
