St Stephen's Primary School Winners
Having announced the winners of our Causley Trust Children’s Poetry Competition several weeks ago, we are now thrilled to begin sharing the winning poems with you. Inundated with talent from these young budding poets, the words they have created are inspiring and a tribute to the enduring legacy of Launceston’s beloved Charles Causley. We will begin by sharing the work of St Stephen’s Primary School (Year 4).
1st Prize
My Daddy’s favourite colour is blue,
He takes a size 9 shoe.
He likes art,
He likes to draw,
And Mummy makes him vacuum the floor.
He makes our breakfast sweet and nice,
He likes to eat tuna and rice.
He may look grumpy,
But he likes to party,
And he also really enjoys karate.
2nd Prize
With lifted feet, hands still
I am poised, and down the hill
Dart, with heelful mind;
The air goes by in a wind.
Swifter and yet more swifter,
Till the heart with a mighty lift
Makes the lungs laugh, the throat cry:-
“o bird, see, see bird, I fly”
“Is this, is this your joy?
O bird, then I, though a boy
For a golden moment share
Your feathery life in air!”
Say, heart, is there aught like this
In a world that is full of bliss?
“Tis more than skating bound
Steel-shod to the level ground.
Speed slacken now I float
A while in my airy boat
Till when the wheels scarce crawl
My feet to the treadles fall;
Alas, that the longest hill
Must end in a vale; but still
Who climbs with toil, wheresoe’er
Shall find wings waiting there.
3rd Prize
There was a man called Marshall,
Who said ‘raps don’t come in a parcel’.
It was a rap,
Into the trap,
That was the man called Marshall.
There was a ruler named Rick,
He really like to lick!
He got a parcel,
From a man called Marshall.
Help me now, Ruler Rick!
There was a Queen Macbeth,
Who didn’t trip his death,
She got a parcel,
From a man called Marshall,
Help me now Queen Macbeth.
The man called Marshall,
Sent his parcels:
Everyone gathered around.
They pulled out their guns
And home-made buns,
And shot that horrible sound!
Causley Commendation Prize
There once was a very brave spy,
Whose name was Lucy O’Pie,
Who hid by a wall,
In the shopping mall,
Whatever the reason why!
Then she saw the enemy base,
and her legs began to race!
She did a big kick,
Which made her feel sick,
But she got in the enemy base.
When she got in, she made chase,
And went back to her own team’s base,
She gasped “I’ve found out,
What the enemy’s planned out!”
And explained it at a very fast pace!
