Happy New Year!
The start of 2022 means the kickstart of new projects and the beginning of the countdown to our Spring events. Here’s what we have coming up in the next few months:
The Charles Causley International Poetry Competition:
Our International Poetry Competition is a major event of our yearly calendar. This year, Trinidadian Scottish writer Vahni Capildeo (they/them) will be our Head Judge. Vahni moved to the UK in 1991 to read English language and literature at Christ Church college at the University of Oxford and has published eight books and eight pamphlets so far in their career. They have also volunteered at Oxfam Head Office and the Oxford Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Centre. Vahni will be selecting our winning entries for this year’s competition and will announce the winning writers in April 2022.
Our International Poetry submission guidelines:
- Poems have a maximum limit of 40 lines but no minimum.
- The title is not included in the line count, nor are the lines between stanzas. Titles, epigraphs and dedications are also not counted as lines.
- The poem/s may be on any subject.
The closing date for the competition is midnight on Monday 28th February 2022. See our dedicated website page for more information.

Patrick Gale has been a patron of The Charles Causley Trust for many years. During this time, he has been involved with our Arts and Literature festival, our Young Person’s Poetry Competition and now we are partnering up with him for the launch of his latest book, Mother’s Boy, based around the known facts of the boyhood and youth of Charles Causley and the life of his mother, Laura. We will be hosting a 3-day Mother’s Boy event from the 4th-6th of March. For more information about how to book tickets for these events, see our dedicated event page.
The Maker:
