Our Gang HQ, by Faith Lydall
Faith won first place in the 5-11 years category in our 2022 Young People’s Poetry Competition.
Our house is not grand or particularly big,
Though five of us live through its doors.
It has a unique smell of roast dinners and guinea pig,
And grubby fingerprints paint the walls.
Our lounge is for dens made of cushions and sheets,
The sofas make great trampolines!
It’s where we cuddle up for film nights gobbling treats,
And hold discos when we’re full of beans.
In our dining room we tell stories about our day,
Whilst my brother squawks about his dinner.
We race around the table when it’s time to play,
Then we squabble over who’s the winner.
Our bedrooms look like a market crime scene,
Clothes and books scattered across the floor.
Mummy starts getting cross – “Keep your rooms clean!
Make your beds! Fold your clothes! Shut your drawers!”
But our house is a place of comfort and kindness,
In its walls I am never alone,
It’s like hot chocolate and hugs when I’m feeling nervous,
It’s our gang HQ – it’s my home.
