We are delighted to introduce you to one of our amazing festival acts, The Story Republic!
The Story Republic are a group of engaging, talented performers who create short, pop-up performances for festivals and other events. They perform everywhere from bandstands, cafes and ferries, to setting up in the street!
The Story Republic create exciting ten to fifteen minute shows, bringing stories to life through their engaging performances. Their work features poems, stories and songs by a selection of Cornish writers, including our very own Charles Causley. ‘Figgie Hobbin’, where a grumpy King pushes away all delicacies in favour of his prized Cornish pudding, is just one of many of Causley’s poems that the performers bring to life.
The choral, ensemble performances given by the Story Republic brings to mind the tradition of old-fashioned storytelling. As you listen to their tales, you are transported to a Cornish shore. It is almost as if you are warming yourself by a fire and delighting in hearing the stories of the land come to life, rather than simply watching them perform onstage.
Their team is made up of experienced performers, as well as emerging talents, all with varying backgrounds in theatre. The Story Republic are directed by Annamaria Murphy, the Artistic Director, and Nix Rosewarne, the Guest Director. As you can see from the image that proceeds this article, they are a striking bunch, decked out in their Sunday best, their suitcases and bags trailing along beside them. Looking as if they stepped out from a 1950s period drama, their stories are sure to transport you to a different time.
